It's too bad these dang polls only give 6 (SIX) choices!

It would make them more accurate if they had more!

Allright Adobe Machine...nice selection of tools.....well the problem is the kids will most likely not know the value of any of our machines and will sell them for pennies on the dollar once we are history......

Are you in New Mexico?

I had my 3 car garage COMPLETELY filled with woodworking machines, including a 4x8 CNC router, 8' sliding tablesaw (euro), 5hp shaper, 24" bandsaw, 16" jointer, 20" planer, 37" widebelt sander, 21 spindle boring machine, single end dovetail machine, edge sander, and spindle sander.

Then I got into metalworking and I stuffed in a Jet 9x42 mill and a Jet 1340 lathe. Also have a chopsaw and a Hobart Handler 180. Gonna build a 2nd shop in my backyard after the rain settles, hopefully SOON, and am planning to move half the woodworking machines there. That'll give me room for a surface grinder, metal bandsaw, and more homemade CNCs!

In case you're wondering, every single machine except for the lathe and mill are easily moveable by pallet jack or mobile base. All my assembly is done in the family room.

Recently aquired a Comet mill (still setting it up), just tested my home built 7 1/2 horse 3 ph. converter yesterday for my mill and it works, floor model drill press, old 16" Duall band saw, various bench and pedestal grinders, Lincoln Idealarc 300 Tig welder (old but works great), 50 ton hydrolic press (with 20 ton bottle), oxy/acel set, 7" and 4 " angel grinders. Now for the wood stuff, 10" table saw, 10" radial arm saw, 6 " rockwell jointer, 12 1/2 planer, 6" molder, 6x48 belt & disc sander, old wood lathe. Add to this misc. hand auto and wood tools, a parts cleaner, sand blaster and a cherry picker all in a 24 X30 shop and yes, too much stuff. If only I was good at using more than just a few of the tools.

better remove your location from your profile guys! :D

I would hit steve up his stuff is the best!

oh and I got 9x12 cnc lathe 7x13x20 CNC mill (in progress) drill press, saw, grinder, disk sander, table saw, radial arm saw, vaccum table (in re-work), air compressor, electronics bench/workstation, sheet metal box break/shear/roller.

And yes this fits into a garage! (barely)

Right now, the only real machines (not meant to be held in hand) are a $40 drill press and an 8x14 lathe. One day, a mini-mill, bench grinder, sander, and bandsaw would be nice. But I manage for now.

Again, only 6 choices?
9" South Bend, Clausing like knee mill (really a Johannesson), Emco mini lathe, 3 axis CNC Bridgeport, Hardinge lathe being converted to CNC, Delta variable speed drill press, Roll-in metal cutting bandsaw, Atlas wood lathe (was a metal lathe), old hand crank Post Drill, table saw, bench grinder, drill sharpner, large delta belt sander, planer, jointer, etc. My wife is an enabler to my tool habit.
My excuse is that I need all of it to fix things around the house...

Like clockwork, the forklift I rented arrived at 9:00AM, the friend I talked to last evening showed up at 10:00AM, and at 11:00AM the flatbed truck arrived with my new machines on top!

After several hours of shuffeling the machines and removing the skids, the new machines were in position in my little garage shop! I now have a tool & die shop setup in a 25x9 foot section of my double garage! With a little more work, I'll actually be able to get the car in there as well!

As you can see from the yellow lines on the floor, I had planned the placement carefully days in advance!

The next job is to build a partition wall 6ft high out of 2x4's, and put 1/4 ply on the shop side of the partition. This will help keep the debris away from my car, and provide a path for the lathe's electrical box. Not to mention a place to hang all my frequently used stuff!

Then, when the Heavy Duty Phase Converter arrives, I will start wiring the 3-phase surface grinder to my house's single phase breaker box! I have also ordered a 36x62 rubber mat for in front of the lathe, its made from old tires, I hope none of them were steel belted radials!

Then I need to level the machines and fill the coolant tanks, the surface grinder is the easiest to level, as it has three monster screws in its heavy cast iron base :)

This is an exciting time, so much that I forgot to take pictures in the beginning! (bummer) (chair)

Oh yea, the New 13x40 lathe, the Used 6x12 surface grinder, and a used 6" Kurt mill vise cost me $5483, pluse $170 delivery, plus $125 for forllift rental.
Now I really need to make some parts to sell!

Eric, looks good, you are going to have a very nice shop. it pains me to say this after its all neatly in place, but consider putting the surface grinder as far away from the lathe and mill as possible. There is inevitably airborne grit from its use, especially when dressing the wheel. relocating on the other side of the partition would be ideal, but at a minimum through a sheet of plastic over the other machine tools.

Mcgyver,
That's why I bought a surface grinder with a flood coolant pump! That will keep a lot of the abrasive dust down, but you are 100% correct! The idea of a plastic cove is good, but my habit of making blue chips would kill the plastic instantly! I do not plan on using the grinder too much, just to true up some tools and parts! Then sharpen cutters as the accessories become available! I currently have a bid on a Weldon air-bearing attachment for endmills.

My main concern is the lathe bed is so close to the garage door, if it were open during a windy rain, it could get rusty real fast! So maybe I should make a big lexan cover that will hinge out of th way, humm......???

Eric, after i posted re grinding dust, i realized you're experienced and no doubt had thought of this. still i'd toss a tarp or plastic over the mill when truing up wheels.

I've never bothered getting the coolant going on my surface grinder. Two reasons, 1) my english trained old timer tool and die maker mentor (as that enough adjectives?) says dry grinding is every bit as good on a manual machine, just go slowly , and 2) another t&c friend's wife complains of his breath smelling like coolant. assuming he's not drinking it, i never liked the idea of inhaling all that. maybe i should reconsider, but so far its been dry grinding with a disposable mask

Eric!
With making the list, I forgot to congratulate you on a very nice looking shop that is well planed and layed out, you really SHOULD be very proud of it!!!

When I worked in my garage and even now I used 2 old screen doors joined by hinges to form a folding screen to control the chips that came off the mill. I have 2 pairs of them. They allow air to flow but stop the chips from getting everywhere in the shop. That should work well for you also! :)

Thanks Cal Blacksmith!

I have just uploaded more images of my shop!
The Electrician will be here tomorrow, to hook up the 220VAC 3-Phase motors to my house wiring which is 1-phase!

I'm anxious to make chips with the machines!

I did get the 110VAC stuff on the Grinder working, the Electromagnetic Chuck is really powerfull! It has really fine polls running the 12" length of the chuck!

Soon I'll be able to re-grind all my parallels and other tools!

All day Friday I worked on retrofitting a 5C Collet Closer on to my new lathe, it was new from the same manufacturer as the lathe! First I had to make an adapter to fit the closer to the end of the spindle, then I had to drill holes in the gearbox near the edge, to maount the ancor bar for the collet closer. when all that was done, i realized the drawbar thread was messed up, and would not take a standard 5C collet! So i dismanteled the whole unit, and put the draw bar in the lathe chuck and re pointed the 20-pitch thread to fit the collet (what a pain in the ass to pick up an exsisting thread)!
Then I re assembled the whole unit, re-mounted it on the end of the lathe, and fount it to be totally impossible to adjust the tension of the collet closing, because of some hidden spring loaded pint in the revolving part of the unit! That was aggrivating! Then i realized the unit would NOT work above 600 RPM! Now that made me mad! :boxing:

My lathe has a maximum of 2000 RPM, and it started to walk across the floor! The Chinese Collet Closer was so poorly made, nothing on it was concentric! Aand impossible to repair, short of remanufacturing 90% of the unit!

So Monday Morning I will be battling the distributor who sold it to me, and I will insist on getting my money back!

I did a little research, and found that KBC tools & MSC Supply both sell a Hardinge grade collet closer for $1000, thats my last resort, if I can not get a used one !

Live and learn!

Until I can get out of LA, or find a place with a yard, and/or barn/garage ($600k+ in LA - bup that), I have to deal with small machines, and not being able to use them most of the time. Tiny apartments w/ new mothers upstairs who never leave will be the death of me.

Sherline:
5400 CNC mini mill
4400 CNC mini lathe

Ryobi (all bought within the last month, none used yet - simply too loud)
small band saw
12" compound mitre saw
router table

If you're in LA, and know how someone can find space in which to work for not too much money, please let me know. And if you're wondering - I'm here because of a good office job, but my heart lives in a spacious workshop, somewhere deep in the woods, with unicorns.

I have a 3000sq ft shop I share with 5 others. We've got tons of crap, most of it oriented towards car restoring/racing. Here's a short list of some of our stuff:

K2 CNC plasma table, custom CNC vertical mill, HF X1 CNC vertical mill in enclosure, 2x drill presses, brake press, bead roller, abrasive saw, aluminum miter saw, sand blasting cabinet, parts washer, 2x car lifts, 80gal 7hp compressor with hard lines around the shop, throatless sheet cutter, 3 MIGs (2 small ones, one large), stick welder, Torchmate plasma cutter, large and small gas torches, various fixed dollies for metal work, pinball machine, original Defender table game, shop stereo with 16 foot video projector and game consoles, Amana fridge large enough for a keg and a barbecue

We're in the market for a horizontal metal band saw and a lathe. We might also get some more lifts and a fork lift. Since we are in an industrial warehouse, we also have 3-phase electrical, which is pretty cool, not that we really use it (except for the large MIG, compressor and plasma cutter).

Hi all,

I have a Grizzly vertical/horizontal knee mill, a Grizzly 12" x 36" lathe, a Delta floor stand drill press, and a horizontal metal cutting band saw. This is all packed into a half garage car space along with two work benches.
I sure like some of the shops I've seen on this site but they are just dreams right now.

Cheers,

Mike
