View Full Version : Engraving Sub-Forum?
jwagner 03-25-2006, 03:22 AM What is the best forum to discuss Engraving. Engraving spreads across different materials, it is someting art but not always, it is not printing, but sometime drivin by printer like drivers, the machines are much lighter in build and much faster in feed rates.
I think a sub-forum devoted to engraving would be a good idea, one might combine laser and rotary engraving, though the 2 are quite different from a mcahine point of view.
svenakela 03-25-2006, 03:53 AM I think here are too many sub's already...
jwagner 03-25-2006, 12:32 PM Do you have a posititve suggestion which sub is most appropriate for engraving discussions?
Stepper Monkey 02-22-2007, 04:59 AM A sub for this seems like a good idea. I would certainly find it useful anyway. It is, I think, the only subject I really haven't been able to find answers or consistent discussions on. I have seen a number of references by folks about engraving on various random threads though.
How many out there play with engraving?
cut more 02-22-2007, 06:00 AM How about just a forum titled engraving? I think the threads could show if a sub is needed for different types ie. laser or rotary.

x6xtyx9x 02-23-2007, 08:49 PM I agree engraving is a huge portion of CNC. Not just for hobbyist but for production. You have my support!!!
svenakela 02-24-2007, 07:00 AM I'll ask CNCAdmin to think about it, if he likes it you'll have it. :)
Regards,
Sven
x6xtyx9x 02-24-2007, 08:45 AM Thanks Sven. I know its off subject, but how is Sweeden? Love the country absolutely beautiful...
gingem 02-24-2007, 08:47 AM I am relatively new to the forum and rarely have the time to do much posting. I have both engravers and CadCam systems that keep me very busy. I use Artcam for CAD and Corel for my engraving. Been doing the engraving for over 20 years and CAD for about the same. I have only worked with Artcam and my mill for about 3 years. The engraving forum would possibly have lacking interest since there are many engraving sites out there.
CNCadmin 02-26-2007, 09:28 AM here ya go!
bclark6716 02-26-2007, 12:51 PM Since the admin said OK, I will make the first post.
I am very new to the CNC arena and have questions about engraving. I have a 24 x 36 router running mach2 and Vcarve Pro.
My problem is this. In VCarve Pro, I have only found out how to take a font and vcarve. I would like to know the process of setting up a file for engraving a 1 x 2 brass plate for a trophy.
Thanks
Brian
gingem 02-26-2007, 01:19 PM Hi Brian
I could help you if you were using an engraver but my CNC mill runs on totally different type of software. On my engraver I just define the area to be engraved and the force required to cut into the material. On plastic and soft materials I use rotary cutting bits and on brass and metals I mostly use diamond drag.

I saw a wizard in mach 3 this weekend for making text, I did not use it but it looked easy to use. You might try that for the text part. Sorry, I have not used v carve.

Tony Mac 02-26-2007, 03:59 PM Hi Brian,
What CNC machine are you running?
Have you looked at the Text Engraving video Tutorial on the Vectric web site?
See > http://www.vectric.com/vcarve-download/VCarveTutorial9.exe
If you need help with a project drop an e-mail to Vectric Support.

bclark6716 02-26-2007, 04:04 PM Thanks Tony,
I did not realize there was a tutorial available. I will check it out tonight.

bclark6716 02-26-2007, 04:50 PM Tony,
Sorry I did not answer your question fully. I have a CAMaster SR-23 with a 2hp HF spindel with 0-24k rpm and ball screws which give me a resolution of 0.0001".
I just finished watching you video and it gave me alot to go on.
Also, in the video the program title displayed VCarve Pro 5. Has there been a recent release? Just bought your program two weeks ago.
BTW, For being such a newby, I realy love your program. It has made my move into CNC very easy.
Thanks,
Brian
Tony Mac 02-26-2007, 05:15 PM Hi Brian,
The VCarve Pro5 was the default name that was given to that particular job when we were recording the video.
The current version of the software is 3.102 and we are planning to release version 4 in a couple of months. Because you have only just purchased the software you will receive version 4 as a Free Upgrade.
I hope the videos help and let me know if you have any questions,
Tony
