View Full Version : the true test dertsap 03-15-2006, 07:58 PM my first real test for the system ,5 1/2 hrs machine time , little over 480,000 lines of code " Iron Maidens Trooper " Kammo1 03-16-2006, 03:24 AM That is "AWESOMME!!!!!!!!!!!" what machine did you use to do that homemade ??also what software that is amazing dertsap 03-16-2006, 06:40 PM ya i did it on my homemade table , the software is image to g code demo , it is a wicked little piece of software the pictures don t quite do it justice , that is a tough picture to throw at it , but it rendered it quite well , i think that i m going to have to buy that software out of all the demo s i ve looked at this is by far the easiest and works really well , i d recommend it to any one, the carving is 12'' x 8.5'' at .15 deep next is the Live after death poster Kammo1 03-17-2006, 03:44 AM Many thanks for the reply greatly appreciated, any pics of your machine ?? dertsap 03-17-2006, 09:32 PM i posted one in the past , but redid the gantry and z axis so it doesn t look the same , i ll try to post some soon , its still a little awkward looking , still needs a few mods done but i m overall pretty happy with the way it performs phantomcow2 03-17-2006, 09:41 PM WEll done! That is an excellent carving, must be a good machine. I'de like to see pictures also. WHat cutting tools did you use? dertsap 03-17-2006, 10:52 PM 1/4'' spot drill with a .02 step over .01 step over would have been perfect but too much time to cut at that dertsap 03-17-2006, 11:13 PM here are some pics , the table is 24 x 48 i need to build some solid motor mounts ,these ones are temp , the motors are vexta nema 34 285 oz motors , connected to 3/4- 6 acme lead screws , driver is a fet3 , i bought a 24 - 28v power one power supply from ebay , at this point of time it rapids at 80- 100ipm but i keep it at 60 and cut at 50 to avoid any trouble , i need to correct a past post i made because at some point i had put it to half steps so the software was showing 160 ipm (i thought something didnt seem right) but even at 60 ipm contented ,well for now dertsap 03-25-2006, 06:32 PM the latest pic , machine isn t much to look at but it does cut well ,got my eyes on a wack off aluminum at work the are planning to throw out , looks like i ll be doing the real build sooner than i thought metal heads have never died we just cut our hair ImanCarrot 03-27-2006, 04:23 AM Absolutely awesome work man! Semisentient 03-29-2006, 11:06 AM Yup, and some of us old metalheads go bald... :) Great job! I can't wait to make mine. I'm in the parts aquiring phase right now. Gonna start on the torsion box this week. There are just so many cool things to do with these routers! James dertsap 03-30-2006, 07:27 PM nice to come home after the grunt and just play , i love to run cnc , but work is work and this is my own lil piece of mind , can t wait to do the alumiminum machine , this one was to see how good it can be before i sunk myself into something that wasn t worth it , and was it worth it to go this far , HELL YA reeftoker75 03-31-2006, 04:51 AM how does that software work Enraged 03-31-2006, 03:07 PM you could sell those on ebay to pay for your machine :) looking good! dertsap 03-31-2006, 09:02 PM thanks guys i thought you d like them , the software is great , it is more or less idiot proof , they have a working demo ,import the picture give it the sizes you want , presto happytriger2000 06-04-2006, 11:17 AM That's awsome piece of work!!! May I know what driver you use for the steppers? :) bigz1 06-04-2006, 12:47 PM Fantastic pieces. Whats the software and do you have a link? dertsap 06-04-2006, 05:16 PM the driver for the steppers was the stepper world fet3 , ive since been building a better system and changed to the gecko s which are far better , the software is image to gcode , if you do a google search you will easily find it , they have a 30 day demo , its a great software , happytriger2000 06-05-2006, 06:49 AM Hi dertsap, I have a FET4 with 3 stepper motors from Japan Servo(kh42km2/801) hooked up, and Im running the system with KCAM. When the motors run, they 'Tick' every 2 seconds, shouldnt it be smooth turn?, I cant really tell the magnitude of the tick, but I can feel it when holding the motor, what could be the problem?? Does it matter if I apply 5V to a 4.6V stepper motor? Cheers, Stepper motor Spec. can be found here: http://www.jimbo.co.jp/kh42km2.htm Photos and PDF file in attachment :) dertsap 06-05-2006, 05:43 PM kcam isn t the smoothest software , but at the same time running in fullstep isn t that smooth either ,i'm concerned that your motors are to small , maybe your loosing steps ,try connecting a bigger power supply but dont forget the power resistors i connected dual at power supplies in the past and it worked quite well heres a linkhttp://www.procooling.com/index.php?func=articles&disp=52&pg=1 DONT FORGET THE RESISTORS or you will burn your motors up . depending on what you are doing ebay usually has some great deals on motors , and the fets are built to run quite large motors , power resistors on ebay are very cheap as well you will notice a huge improvement in performance with more power happytriger2000 06-06-2006, 11:43 AM Hi dertsap, Thanks for your tips :) , What sort of stepper motos would you recomend? Im using a 5V, 10 Amps Power Supply, is this powerful enough?. Is true that the motors get hot after 15~20 miniutes, very HOT!!. dertsap 06-06-2006, 05:33 PM i wouldn t recommend steppers below 200 oz ,i made that mistake twice , the bigger the better i say ,then it leaves room to grow , you can be under powered but never over powered , keep an eye on ebay there are a lot of really good motors going thru there, also the power supply should be up to 20 times the motor voltage , so i would say your under powered , think your motors get hot wait till you connect power resistors to a beefier power supply , i could nearly lite a smoke off my power resistors , so heatsinking and a fan is a must happytriger2000 06-07-2006, 08:23 AM Thanks dertsap, I'll have a look at ebay for stepper motors . where can I find a 20 times power supply for my current stepper motor?, like you mentioned before, build it yourself using 2 computer psu? dertsap 06-07-2006, 05:37 PM ebay has power supplies as well ,thats where i got the one that i am currently using , but if you do want to connect dual at supplies check out the link i posted earlier and make sure you read the safety precautions as to going about it , those little supply hold a lot of power so do your research before doing it , it worked well for me and others in the forum ,some have connected 3 or more together take a look at these postings http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20494 this is what i m currently working on , i used the same motors and lead screws with the fet3 board KrashKing405 06-07-2006, 07:23 PM What are the voltage reqs for your steppers? I've been told that my 24V steppers, which came out of a couple printers that did not have anything higher than a 12V line, would need something to the order of 100V to run 3 of em. dertsap 06-07-2006, 10:15 PM 24v will work on them but they ll be slow, you shouldn t go less than the rate given |
