View Full Version : What Bits Do You use For Plywood?

I have been experimenting with different bits to cut 1/8 aircraft ply (baltic birch).
I tried end mills, but the amount of "fuzz" on the top surface was too much.
I then tried a Dremel carbide grout removal bit. Much better cuts, and less "fuzz", but still not real smooth.
I am using 1/16 (.063) diameter bits. Cutting at 50 IPM.

I thought about a diamond bit, but have not tried it yet.

I did buy a cheap router speed control, but it died quickly. It was rated for 15 amps, and my trim router is 1.5. I have to take it back to HF and try another.

Has anyone found a suitable bit (1/16) for plywood?

Thanks,

Joe Petro

If you want no fuzz, you'll need to use a downcut spiral, but I woldn'nt know where to find one that small. If you can live with some fuzz, these might work for you. http://www.precisebits.com/products/carbidebits/ultrabit-soft.asp?txtsearchParamTxt=MM3+Ultrabit&txtsearchParamCat=ALL&txtsearchParamType=ALL&iLevel=1&txtsearchParamMan=ALL&txtsearchParamVen=ALL&txtFromSearch=fromSearch&I1.x=8&I1.y=12

This (http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/N2DRVSH?SISECT=0000000714&SIS0NO=00000199227) has what you're looking for. Just select size and spiral type and material.

I just talked to a tool company here in town.
I told the guy what I was doing, and he asked a lot of questions.

He finally said that the first thing I should do is slow the router RPM down.
He said the bit is smashing material, then pushing it up, instead of cutting or slicing. Sounds good to me.
I'm gonna take that speed control back, and try onother one.

Thanks for the replies!
