Ok I have a basic idea as to the software side still looking and asking about motors and controllers. Here is the deal I am looking at building a small say 2'x2'x1' cnc router I want to be able to cut metal wood and foam. I intend to build a much larger version once I have a good grasp on this smaller one. I am thinking about a moving Gantry as I want to have 4 or more axis (I will learn 3 axis first but want to do 4,5,6 in the future so build small learn then build big) So I guess what I am asking is where do I start the only things I know is what software I most likely will use and not totally sure about that I am looking at MACH2/3 to run the cnc and rainnea has a plug in for 3ds to create tool paths and also sheet cam and I already own autocadR14, and 3ds 2.5 and 3. Please I am looking to do some small billet parts from aluminum some foam cutting in future full size bucks to pull molds from for cars etc... and wood carving I would like to carve pictures (preferable from like a .JPG for wooden plaques, coasters with kids face on it or a wooden murel?)to hang on the walls maybe a custom coffee table top stuff like that.
Please point me where I need to go what software (please trying to keep this CHEAP) what controler what motors and how to build the bed and what not to support the work I want to do etc... Completelly over my head please throw life vest. haha

So, you think you have the software side done.....ya just need to merge the hardware to it......*smile*.....
Okay so you're envelope is 2'x2'x1'.......2'x2' is not a challenge.....Ah, but the 1' is a challenge....well moderate challenge.....kinda depends if you always need the 1' or if most of your work will fall into 2 categories....0 to 6 inches and 6 to 12 inches.....for foam work.....12 inches should not be a problem....well within limits.....you have to make sure that the thing sticking down 12 inches does not interfere with the stuff that is at the 6 or 10 inch level......think about it a bit....

I'd add the following:
Forget about machining metal, especially with a 12" Z. There's simply too much cantilevering in order for you to machine something as hard as steel. If you set your goals on softer materials like foam and wood, you may be OK.
An option you might consider if you go with a 12" tall gantry: build a secondary table that sits 6" above the main table. This will bring your work 6" below your gantry instead of 12". This will minimize flex in the Z axis for work that is shorter than 6".

Ok thanks for the replies I have thought about it and to start I just want to do wood carvings so the Z will only be a few inches 6 or less. The big question is how do I build this thing? I really dont know where to start I am the kind of person that needs plans any ideas where I can get plans for free possibly to build something this size? I also wonder what motors and what not to use can I use the little motors out of PC printers I have 2 printers that dont work but the motors are good? I also have questions on how to zero the machine and how it knows where its at and what not is there a place or something that has the basics broke down for the Total beginner? This forum is great but cant seem to find the basics lots of info but it jumps around.
