I am building a ferret kennel. It is going to be at the longest, 100" long by 24" wide by 60" tall.

It's not going to be just pieces that long though, because it is going to be split into smaller sections.

It will have 3 separate levels and each level will have 3 cage sections in it (sectioned off with plexiglass or abs plastic).

I want to know, for this - that means the pieces have the ability to be cut in thirds - so instead of bottom runners of 100" I can have that split to 33", etc.

The load on each level - each cage might have a few ferrets in it (I run a rescue) so they're around 1 to 3 lbs, and a litterbox in each cage weighing about 5 lbs. So that's probably - not more than 50 lbs per level.

Which type of extrusion should I use - can I use the 10 series at all? What about the lighter type of 15? i really don't want to use double slotted pieces. All suggestions are welcome though.

Thanks,

Laryssa

33" with 50 lbs gives a .048 deflection if the ends are clamped and the load is evenly distributed with 1001 (lite 1" square extrusion). Centered load is .076 deflection and end load is 1.206".

on 1X2 if the extrusions is laid so that it looks like XX then the deflection is .029. The other way

X
X

it is .008.

on a 1515 or 1.5"X1.5" the deflection is .010, .015 and .237 respectively.

For the difference in price, I would go with the cheapest. It's not going to fall down. Try one of the advertisers here 8020 surplus, they usually have good deals.
