Gawd I hate flying. I'd have been a rek on that plane.

I went off the cliff at the airport on Catalina Island in a plane when I was in high school.

'Rekd teh flying ain't so bad, it's the landings

Do we have a "Rotating Parts Engineer" here?
I wonder if hailstones like that damage the engines, or if it is just like throwing ice cubes in a blender. I would think vanes and blades are all shot. But on the other hand, the compressor will do a good job of grinding up just about anything that enters I would think.
Birds get swallowed up with no ill effects.

I'm no engine ear, but I know that those engines are very VERY stout. They'll run stuff thru there you wouldn't believe and still run with barely a hickup. They're kind of redundant in nature so a bit of damage won't make it inoperable. You'd have to almost completely destroy 50% or more of the turbine to kill it.

I have a video clip of a guy getting sucked THRU a jet engine on an aircraft carrier, and got spit out the back side almost scratch free. Amazing the way it just sucked him in and spit him out.

I have seen that vidio of that guy getting sucked through the engine. That was incredible.

I have read somewhere that they shoot chickens through the front window and running turbine engines to test reliability.

The ultimate grinder for minced meat. :p

Mostly when a jetfighter has to make an emergency landing is not when a bird flies into the turbine, but more when one goes through the front window. At those speeds one can get very badly injured.

Ed.

There is an old story about the US Air Force using a steam canon to shoot chickens at jet windscreens for testing. According to the story the testing facility was run by a certain Colonel by the name of (what else?) Sanders. LOL

It's not just a 'story'. I've seen the videos. Gruesome, but kinda kewl too.

How 'bout the 'real' cadavers they used to use for crash test dummies?

I need new underwear and sets in this plane; it must have sounded like hell in that plane.

My buddy owns a small 4-setter warrior 2. We got caught in a little rainstorm and it sounded like the plane was going to come apart. Manage that tin can.

It's not just a 'story'.
the part about "Colonel Sanders' Kentucky fired chicken" might be a bit of an embellishment :)

first let me say, this is my first post here. i just found this board recently when i ran across a link to it at another board.
i work in a machine shop near dayton ohio.and i know the chicken thing is true. i once made part of a new latching parts for the cockpit canopy of air force jets. the prototypes i made were molded in the canopy and then they fired chickens at them to test the integrity of the new design to see if they would fracture.
the way i understood it then was the chickens were whole and fresh but not alive.
i believe the testing was done at wright patterson base here local.
i still have the fixtures to make the parts on my shelf, that was at least 6-7 years ago.
i even seen the parts (or at least same as mine) at a playground by the base, they had a canopy mounted to a wooden playset for kids to climb on.

wow i've been censored.
that was my first time ever.
the glass/plastic bubble over the "area where the pilot sits" is what i meant to say.

Rekd I have seen that same video, and from the little bit I know about turbines, I assumed that his helmet must have torn up the inside of the engine allowing him throuhg, they have a lot of fan blades very close to one another and I don't think a person could get through there without either damaging the engine or damaging himself.

Actually, the guy was sucked in but was able to stay in front of the engine because his gear caught and saved him. I saw a program that described the incident. He was taken out from the front after shutdown. The flame that shot out was from loose items that went through.
