We are going to be putting a sub plate in a machining center that will be in place for a few weeks. We are concerned that rust may start between the plate and the machine table. Dose anyone know of a way to prevent this? We are using Cincinnati synthetic cutting fluid (60LF). We have though about using a film of cosmalean or grease.

When I used to rebuild car engines, I used automatic transmission fluid (ATF) on machined surfaces to keep them from rusting till I could get around to assembling them.

I think LPS-3 and Boeshield are the most highly recommended products. Boeshield is now carried by Sears ($20 for a can and some phoshoric acid). LPS-3 is less I believe.

I use the LPS-3 under my fixture, and it stays mounted for a couple months at a time (dedicated machine). The only thing I have developed was some minor staining; but no rust what so ever. The type of coolant you use will have a big impact on rust formation too.
