Hi everyone!

The Holiday spirit has taken a hold of one of our members. He aquired a few stepping motors for his own use and would like to offer a set of three to one member-in-need. What are being made available are two 100 oz-in, 1.4A unipolar 5.2v. steppers and a third somewhat smaller unipolar stepper. I'll try to get more details, but for now that is all I know.

These are the rules the donor has asked me post, in his own words:

1-As motors are easily bought on e-Bay for North Americans, I'd like these to go to anywhere but Canada and the U.S. Entry must include your location and we need to be able to ship to you from Canada.

2-Entry must include pictures of the unfinished machine.

3-Entry must show either a driver already in hand OR a complete description of the drive(s) that will be driving the motors. This will help ensure the motors are a fit for the drives used.

4-These are not for resale; if they are not used just give 'em to someone else...

5-One winner is to be selected on ???. (Christmas eve was suggested, but it's awful close already. I'm going to hope our donor won't be offended and say that all submissions need to be in by the end of this year and that a selection will be made on January 1, 2006. -Evodyne).

If you are on a very tight budget please note that shipping costs will be "taken care of", so this is a 100% free deal!

Guys, this is for the builder who needs a little help. Any entries that don't meet the posted criteria will be deleted. One entry per member, please. Our donor will determine the winner and his decision is final.

Hi my name is Jose, Im currently a college student adn well Im building a cnc machine and I have all the panels and rods materials but since on my location I dont have to much tools so I decided to a seller on ebay that he will buid my machine for me .

I already buy the hobbycnc board that cost 79 dollars, I already post something about help on wich parts I will need, I was planing on buying some economical steppers that I found on ebay, but well anyone knows what could happend so...

hi im smeg,living in england, and would like to win this one, am currently trying to rustle up a pic controller, based on the u2 firmware from dakeng(cant seem to get to grips with eagle grrrr) ;) and outputing through some 2n2222's . havent started to builds a machine yet, as i would like to have the electronics up n tested first, but have an old drummond round bed and an old mini lathe(mini lathe is favorite to convert at the mo) in the workshop that i might convert. if you need any more info's please ask

Here are some motor specs from our benefactor:

Drive sequence: Unipolar (6 wire) (can be wired bipolar too)
Rated voltage: 5.2V
Rated current: 1.4A (1A as bipolars)
Winding resistance: 4.2 Ohms
Holding torque: 100 oz-in
Weight: 2lbs each
Frame: Nema 23 - Double Stack

My small router goes up to 40IPM @40v with good drivers and those motors.

NOTES:

The shafts have spiral tooth gear and will require a 15/64 coupling instead of the standard 1/4" (see picture).

If you wire those as serial bipolars, you would get up to about 140 oz-in of holding torque but trade off some speed. They can also be ran as half-winding for 100oz-in of torque at double the speeds of serial bipolar connection.

Z Motor:

The motor supplied for the Z is a Brother 8 wire stepper with 4 Ohm resistance per coil. This should be way below 1.5A and can be wire serial or parallel bipolar. The lack of spec is kind of compensated by the flexibility the 8 wires bring. I expect a good 80-85 oz-in of this one. For a Z with higher TPI (5/16-18 or 3/16-20), it's perfect. I used to run a motor half this size and still get 14 IPM on Z.

This is a terrific gesture and thanks to Member - X for the donation. CNC gear is difficult and expensive to source outside America so good luck to the winner and I hope to see a finished machine as a result.

A quick update i have scrapped the idea of using my own design controllers and will be using the linistepper controllers,have just noticed the steppers in the contest can be wired in bipolar mode so i could also build the pic step boards and see which set of drivers work best, i have also added ballraces to the clarke mini lathe crosslide screw so it turns a whole lot smoother. just need some steppers now ;) :)

Hi, and thanks for picking me :-) , THanks to Evodyne and Member-X for your geenrositi on donating it and creating a contest so people who wants to build something could had a chance to doing it. Here are 2 pictures of what I have been doing over the last 2 months, is a carbon fiber part for an RC Car, is on carbon fiber, I made it with a dremel but very soon I will be doing it with my CNC at soon it gets on my hand.

Okay. I'm the one giving those motors because I tought someone who need them would build a nice project and the motors alone have very little value when sleeping in the stuff pile. Please don't swamp me on how nice it is, I know but I'm not doing it for any other purpose than to help a bit for all the help I got in the past. I appreciate your heart warming feelings, so let's look at it this way:

Mendez, I really like that small router. I think you got a good deal at 275$. You will like those motors as they are a perfect fit. Seems like a dremel mount on it, the smaller motor will be fine there.

I will go to the post office tomorow and verify the shipping fees. Probably going to be 3 small parcels as there is a max weight of 1kg (we're lucky, each is around 800g) for international mail with canada post. I will ship on January 4th to leave me time for packing and everything else I need to do in the shop for the beginning of the new year.

Hey thanks a lot, Im still waiting for the cnc board I order from hobbycnc , and Im desperate to solder it, I think I will put a pc power supply on it first, in case I know how it works the cnc etc, I hope in acouple of weeks I have my cnc on my hands and I will be posting some parts I will do on carbon fiber. I had to take the motor brackets from the big motors and put those with the smaller motor to get the weight below 1kg on each so they would fit small parcel standards.

I have another question, I will be using a CNC the hobby cnc board, I ask if is ok to use the pc power supply but they told me it has a weak voltage (12V) to use a transformer or wahtever, but I went to Radio Shack nad I saw a power supply or something similar that provides me 24volts and is for 23 dollars, anyone know ?

I've been running those motors at 40v for now and get a decent 25-30IPM engraving speed and 40IPM rapids but my leadnuts are shot.

At 12v it will be really too slow with a simple drive and the hobby cnc board will just not work well at 12v and those motors, especially that those are not 3v but 5.2v thus the 12v is about 2x the 5.2v motors and with 3v motors it's 4x which permit faster speeds.

If they're wired unipolar, a 4A power supply should be plenty. Make sure it has the amps you need. Maybe at 3A you'd be okay but better safe than sorry.

Also, note that when you'll rectify it, it will go up to 1.4 times the AC voltage. That means 40V DC. The hobbycnc board can take up to 42vDC so it seems good to me.

Check the amps!!! You can take a few transfos at the voltage you like and parallel them on the DC side (after diodes and capacitors) for more amps. And of course, there is the micro-wave oven transfo conversion which can deliver heavy amps and allow you to tune the voltage for your needs.

I got my board and I solder all the parts, I got a unipolar stepper forom my printer lol and well Im figurating out how to make it work because Im testing the board with a 12v baterry, any help please ? I dont know wich cable needs to be conected on the board - stepper motor

I'm really curious to know if you ever did try the unipolar / linistepper (http://www.piclist.com/techref/io/stepper/linistep/index.htm) combo against the bipolar / pic step and to hear any results of that comparison.
