I have been in the market for a while for a milling machine to convert to CNC. I found a local guy with a mahine he is considering getting rid of.
The machine is bigger than I want, but it is JUST small enough to entice me.
It is an older machine, but has never been put to any real use. The current owner has used it as a drill press from time to time, but that is it.
I need to convert to CNC, and am looking for advice on servo size, and specifics on existing conversions.
I will need to get this up and running fairly quickly.
I will be using ball screws and gecko drives. (not sure which drives yet)
My biggest concern is the Z axis. For simplicity, I will have to drive the fine adjustment wheel with the servo, and I am worried about backlash. I will look inside when I take delivery, perhaps there is another way.
Here is a picture of the very similar version that Grizzly offers.
By the way, the guy wants 750 CAD for the mill, I think that is fair.

you should take a look at balsamans conversion he did, miljnors conversion, the Industrialhobbies conversion, homecnc and all those others to get your ideas, I like the z-axis on the homecnc and balsamans conversion, it would probably be as simple to make it work possibly better.
