Hello all,

Am very new to all of this CNC world.

Am envisioning to build a CNC Foam cutter and then a CNC Foam router for a future project.

I understand basic componentry I just would like to make sure that the understanding is correct.

1) is this the correct flow chat

Stepping motor -> Motor Driver -> Interface (PC) -> Software

2) The foam cutter will have X axis runners and Y Axis runners Perpendicular to the X Axis.

I will have 2 motors driving each Axis, left and right sides.

Do I need drivers per motor/axis or can I piggy back 2 motors for the one driver for each axis?

Thanks in advance

I believe that since you are going to be cutting foam, I will assume that you are speaking of a hot-wire foam cutter. I have read somewhere that you could "piggy-back" the motors (Left and Right X-axis, Left and right Y-axis) as long as you do not exceed the current rating of your driver boards and you do not want to make a tapered cut. Since you only have two drivers both the left and right cutting towers will make the same movements.

I hope this helps you out.

Joe

hi! my first post here, Esses what u need is a 4 axis stepper board it will run all 4 motors (you will be able to make taper, cone, streaight cuts),
I finished building my foam cutter about 2 weeks ago, I'm still getting the hang of it, but very happy, visit stepperworlddotcom and get the Fet4 controller board, Rustle Laidman is a very nice guy and he will help you with what u need, Im running it with
foamworks, you can download a trial version at foamworksdotnet, Dave is also a very nice guy and he will help you set up your software
