Looking for people or persons in Ohio to link up with and possably start a local chapter or group of sorts. Any one with nothing more than just an intrest in cnc or machine automation should respond. Looking for metal workers, wood workers, foamies, everyone. Based on the responce we will put together a meeting for everyone to get to know oneanother and share ideas, techniques, fields of intrest, capabilitys and the like. If you would like to get to know who is out there with the same intrest as you please post with your first name and the county in which you live. Hope to hear from everyone in the area.

See how well this is working allready. Its only been 2 days and there are 7 of us so far. I bet you never thought that there were so many people so close to you that had the same weird idea to build a machine add abunch of electronics to it and plug into the wall just to see what it can do. And to top it off you jump around shaking your fist in the air in triump about what it was that you just built hopeing no body has seen or heard your little victory dance. You are not alone.

Well guys,
I'm getting ready to kick off my build of a router for dueing wood and SignFome® signs. I own a small sign company, and have been carving and sand blasting signs for years. Now I'm ready to launch into a new phase of my career. I just scored a super buy on slightly used 2" extruded aluminum shapes {same thing as 80/20 aluminum}. I will be picking up about 200 linear feet of this stuff plus all the brackets & screws all that for under $400.00. I hope to be able to put together a 8'x4' router with some left over. I will be using many of the ideas presented on this board. I could really use help in understanding the electrical part of this project. I am looking at stepper motors, and servo motors. I do not understand how to look at the labels on some of the used motors and figure out if they will be able to handle my torque loads. I want to buy motors that will deliver at least 600-800 oz.in. of torque. How does that equate into lb.in s? or Nm? Also anyone want to suggest which is the EASIEST controler system? I have read a little about the "Gecko" system, but still am very open to suggestions.

Thanks,
Bob

Matthew, yea I know where powell is of course. I live over in gahanna, basically right near easton. What kind of projects do you work on? Course i don't know if you have a cnc machine, but you don't neccessarily need one to have projects though :)

I'm curious as to what types of machines other people have, what they do with them, so i'm just gonna describe my machine and what I do...

I actually built mine at first to cut out airfoils with precision, among other things I had in mind. I just have a small hobbycnc.com type system, granted i've changed it from the original plans drastically. I rebuilt the Z axis and used THK linear slides instead of the hobbycnc "slide a piece of plexiglass between some groves" approach. I changed it to accept a large router, have a 3HP or something, makita i think, standard router you by at lowes. Also rebuilt the gantry to allow for a full 12 inches (plus a tiny more) of movement so I could cut the full size of the table. And the gantry also has a little more room, allows 2" thick material to pass under it. Mainly used for when I cut foam stuff.

I drive it with servo motors (most recent upgrade) and gecko drivers. I love the servo's, much faster, great for working with foam. Also switched over to EMC, the linux CNC software/OS. I used to run it all on a custom piece of software I wrote, which did all machine control, etc, but got to be a pain to maintain, especially when a free one out there already exists and is better.

My main project is an insanely oversized RC airplane. 18 foot wingspan, i'm not entirely sure if i'll ever fly it, but it's fun to build :) Really I don't know if it'll fly, I think i may test it as a glider first, throw it off a cliff, and if it doesn't fly then oh well ehhe.

I use it to cut all sorts of parts though, for various projects. Generally it's just an overpriced toy though.

So what's everybody else do with their machine?

Ross

Klick0,
Very glad to hear to meet you. I'd say we are only about 1/2 an hour away from each other. Not very far at all. Having read your post, I don't mind admitting that I'm new at this; definitely not up to your level. It sounds like you have a very nice rig. As for me, I have many, many things that I want to make with my mill. Everything from prototype work, to upgrading parts, etc., etc.

My mill is a Taig CNC mill that I just recently got into working order. I put the steppers and some grease fittings on, built a UPS box and power supply and wired the steppers and driver board, and just purchased Mach2&3, as well as Autocad 2006. I'm definitely more mechanically inclined, than I am with the software. Right now, I'm struggling trying to learn the software so that I can start making lots of little chips out of one bigger one. As far as the software goes, I thought I had a way in which to convert scans, raster images, Autocad drawings, into gcode. For some reason I thought that either Mach2 or Autocad would perform this function, but if they do, I can't seem to figure out how to make them perform.

I would like to install some limit/home switches I have, but that can wait. I'd also like to upgrade the spindle motor to a greater hp, variable speed unit. I've got a nice 2.5hp dc motor, but I can't afford to purchase one of those expensive drive units I've seen on Ebay. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to make my own power supply. That way, I can start purchasing a good selection of end mills, etc. By the way, I welcome your advice on any of the above.

Your project sounds very cool!! I've always wanted to build my own R/C helicopter, and I'd say one of my ultimate goals would be to build a scale working gas turbine.

I'd enjoy helping you with any project you have as I'm sure I could learn a lot from a much more experienced hobbiest. Likewise, if you would like to come over to my shop and check out the rig, feel free. I'd also welcome any advice you may have for me.
Thanks
Matthew

Matthew,

I wanna see a gas turbine man heheh, my machine would not be able to work at those tolerances though. I'm not sure my machine is that great, but it does the stuff I want it to do. I can't really work with metal as much as your mill would. Course with my recent upgrades I was hoping to do better with some metals, but havent got around to testing anything.

Actually I have a video so you can see what it looks like, i posted it somewhere else on here, but i'll link it here: Klicks Machine (https://www.nanonet.net/stuff/klickcnc3d.mpg)

I work mainly with linux software, so i'm limited to what software I use. I generally use QCad (free open source 2D cad program) and then I wrote my own custom dxf to g-code convertor, I name layers different things if i want to do different depths so I can get some 2.5D stuff. Really it's more or less rigging the dxf to my specific needs.

I played with autocad for a while, learned some simple stuff, but i'm a novice when it comes to real cad software. So instead of learning a nice tool I write custom stuff which I understnad eheh. I also wrote a 3d dxf to g-code, which actually that's what the video above is, the g-code came from the my 3d converter.

A long time ago I wrote a image to g-code type convertor, but it was more or less using it as a depth map, not sure entirely what you're trying to do. Dark color meant go deep, and you would specify the depth... really only takes like 30 minutes to write.

oh well i'm at work still, gotta run

Oh yea, I built a 4 rotor helicopter using the CNC machine, however it doesn't fly because it requires a flight computer and I havne't had a chance to write it yet, and even if i do i may not succeed. But it sure blows around a lot of air thought hehe. Using the CNC machine for that was nice though, custom motor mounts that all interconnect really nicely. I have pictures somewhere but i don't know where they are right now...

Ross,
You've got to let me see your R/C toys!! Is your heli gas or electric? Do you have a radio/transmitter for it? As far as I am aware, the flight control software usually comes with the radio. As for cutting metal, or cutting a part to a tolerance that mine could do and yours could not, you are welcome to use mine if you don't mind me looking over your shoulder and asking questions as you work.

I live in Wheelersburg next to Portsmouth Ohio. That is about 100 mile south of Columbus. I’m a newbie to CNC. I have a lot of experience with computers and electronics. But never messed with a CNC. I just purchased one from K2. I thought it would be better to start with one already built. Could I get some suggestion on where would be the best place to start with G-coding. What are the best programs to use to convert different drawling to g-code. I know nothing about this so would appreciate any help to keep me from going down a lot of dead end roads on my way to cncing.

Ed,
I purchased a program that goes by the name of Mach 2 (Art, who wrote the application, also lets you use the new version Mach 3 for the same license fee), not too expensive, has all of the basic features for machine control, and some advanced as well. It has worked very well for me, and a lot of other cnc hobbiest seem to like it as well. I have access to Autocad 2006, but that is a steep learning curve. As for gcode interpreters, I know they are out there that allow you to convert scanned images, .dwg, etc. directly to gcode, but I'm also trying to get a handle on which one seems to be the best for the money. If I come up with any useful info on that, I will let you know.

I wanted to let you guys know that BigLots has a 10" 100 tooth carbide blade for $19.99 to cut your stock down to size. I cut some 80/20 for a freind and it came out like it was machined to size with nothing more than alittle wax on the blade and smeared on the part. Great buy if you are comfortable cutting your own stock withe a saw. And now for the saftey disclamer Dont do this or it will hurt or kill you and your neibors dog and possible burn down the WalMart down the road. I think that about covers all the bases :)

Hi everyone,

Eric here, I have been programing for 6 axises lasers for about 8 years, and have been looking into building a cnc router for the past three, just haven't done it yet. Well through the grace of the update gods, this week I started converting a retired machine we got in the shop into a router. The control and tables are all Anorads with a old Ano III controler. The update gods blessed me more as about three years ago we purchased two Anorad CNC-2000 controllers to replace the older controls. We never did the upgrade and bought "new to us" machines to replace the lasers that had the Anorad's. So I get to play with the blessings of the one above me...

Anyways, I'm about 20 miniutes east of cleveland, south of Burton, Ohio and can help guys out with g-code, CAD/CAM. I have autocad, bobcad ,solidworks, and rhino. With enough experience to be fatal with all of them.

Chalk up another one for NE Ohio. I'm in Stark county right around Canton. I'm a beginner to say the least but managed to build one of Sosylva routers. It's only about 80% of the way I'd like it, but I learned quite a bit in the process. Next plan is to reproduce the basic design in aluminum. My biggest shortcomings right now is lack of any real experience in cad. I'd love to hook up with someone that has experience in autocad. Not that I know of, i've been subscribed to this thread for a while but no real plans of meeting up on here. I live in columbus as well.

It would be nice to do some knowledge transfer with other individuals that are doing cnc.

Hello: I'm in Lancaster Oh, but work in Columbus, as a CNC machinist. What kind of projects is everyone working on? I'm working on putting windows in the house, when I have the money, my next project is building my own air compressor. I have an old dual piston refrigerator pump, and a lead on a propane tank.

Thanks.

Building shotgun barrels here. Looking at adding a wire EDM. Where do you work in Columbus? What equipment are you operating and what are you making? Jim

I work for a place called NDS, we build icecream filling equipment. I mainly run a Daewoo Turning Center, with live tooling, I will run a Dahlia from time to time. I also so do programming, mainly by hand. We have Pro-E cad/cam, should be going back to the software programming when I get some time.
Been there also most 9yrs, great place, I just need to improve my skills, faster, smarter, just mainly faster.

Thanks.

Fredericktown, Ohio. 45 minutes north of Columbus.

Industrial consultant, designer, DynaCNC Distribution, surplus sales, among many other things.

Once I get the shop opened, we can start having meetings there. Play with all the new DynaCNC toys and software.

We should be getting the shop up and going in the next few months, so start planning on some ideas.

Located about 10 miles outside the 275 circle. 25+ years as a machinist, with the last 10 in CNC, 10 years as Q.C. on CMM's and currently a design engineer. My father is a retired Tool & Die man with a small machine shop at home. I am slowly gathering parts for a CNC of my own. But money is tight and time is short. But I guess that's the way all over.

Greetings,

I am "PoppaBear10" from the East TN forum, would you fellow CNC'ers be interested in doing some kind of joint venture as a Mid east or South east CNC machine builders conference?? Like over a Weekend, or all day Friday, Saterday and Sunday???

I think it would be cool to set up classes for subjects of interest, and even bring in your machines (if portable), to show, swap meet, perhaps vendors, etc.

Thoughts?

tgreening,

I am in the akron area, barberton to be exact. I have some experiance in autocad. I would deffinately be willing to help you get started. I am no pro for sure but I can show you how to draw in 2D and 3D. Let me know if you want to get together.

I really would like to get a group of NEO people together to work on these machines and develope new ideas. I think that would be awesome!!!

Who all is interested?????

Allen

I am using my machines for cutting guitars, carving tops, ect.
Are you doing any 3d carving? I have been haveing problems with keeping the cut continous and smooth. Didn't know if it was the way bobcad is generating the code.
Any thoughts?

What version of BobCad are you using? One thing that comes to mind is prior to posting to cam portion is to go to pull down menu "change". click on "reorganize " and then "clean up and optimize." this usually helps. Even after doing this occasionally it will produce a program that does not seem to follow a reasonable process. When you are refering to smoothness of surface are ae you seeing a rippled surface?.
For the price its a a good product. The documentation is limited.

I'm a mechanical engineer and software developer about 30 minutes south of Dayton. Looking to get into CNC, I have built a Hobby CNC board and have purchased a 3D scientific instrument (about 10 inches in X 3 in Y and 2 inches of travel in the Z axis). I have not hooked anything up yet and i do not have the software installed yet.
Just starting...

I'm a student living in Columbus with intention of entering OSU's engineering program soon. I need to learn cnc as one of many techniques for implementing my grand diabolical scheme..Ok, it may not be so grand or diabolical, but it is mine. Best case scenario, you guys are together every weekend and all I need is the location and secret handshake and I'm in. Here's hoping! Seriously, I need some immersion here as I barely know where to start. I have no problem passing tools and holding things to get some experience.

Hello
I live in Wheelersburg next to Portsmouth Ohio. That is about 100 mile south of Columbus. I’m a newbie to CNC. I have a lot of experience with computers and electronics. But never messed with a CNC. I just purchased one from K2. I thought it would be better to start with one already built. Could I get some suggestion on where would be the best place to start with G-coding. What are the best programs to use to convert different drawling to g-code. I know nothing about this so would appreciate any help to keep me from going down a lot of dead end roads on my way to cncing.
Thanks Ed

Ed I am near Huntington WV. not that far away. wheelersburg has quite a street rod scene..... I am a newbe with Mach3 well not really a newbe I think i know quite a bit about it but am just starting my first retrofit. not sure what software the K2 is running.

anyway hello

I'm happy to report that I am in the process of a build in Columbus Oh. We have also posted a community call on a yahoo group. Email me @ bowakowa1@columbus.rr.com if you would potentially like to get together in Columbus and talk shop.
