View Full Version : Another Inspiration Seminar (AKA BBQ) (Melbourne 30th October)
mikie 09-20-2005, 06:42 AM Boys,
I thought you could use the "Seminar" thing as reason to have another get together and inspire the building of a machine.
Do you guys want to have a get together in the next month or so.
I am happy to host it at my place, just means you have to drive to Wattle Glen instead of Donvale?
Any thoughts about it? Any date requests? 16th/23rd of October.
Hey Benny, i didn't know your 89 years old!
/Michael
Kookaburra 09-20-2005, 04:04 PM Damn, I wish I lived in VIC sometimes, but only for the BBQ's and Grand Final Footy Day.
Benny looks very young for his age, he has looked after himself very well over the years. He is the youngest 89 year old I have ever seen, lol.
GO SWANNIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ynneb 09-21-2005, 07:06 AM Yeh You set the date and I will be there. Preferably a Saturday for me.
Wattle Glen sounds cool to me.
I suggest you PM a few of the guys, I dont know if they will chance upon this thread.
Its all the grease from my machine that keeps me looking as young as I look.
ger21 09-21-2005, 07:17 AM Hey Benny, i didn't know your 89 years old!
Doesn't look a day over 87, does he. ;)
derekj308 09-22-2005, 06:32 AM Hey Guys
Derek here a.k.a. derekj308. I would like to attend the BBQ and would like to request the 23rd of Oct as a preffered date as I'll be out of the country on the 16th. I'm in Melbourne metro and have just built a 5 axis stepper controller (just gotta wire it properly instead of jerry-rigging it LOL ). I would like to meet "the locals" and talk CNC and get some inspiration to build a machine to accompany my lonely 5 axis controller.
Cheers
Derek
andy_ck87028 09-24-2005, 04:52 AM 23rd October is good for me.
I think the following weekend is cup day which doesn't suit me or many others possibly.
Mike .... love to see your machine and would definitely like to see Derek's 5 stepper controller (do u feel like donating it Derek ?)
Andy_ck87028
PS Am gearing up to start a log of my machine.... have done heaps of work on it and it is definitely nearing the next stage :o
derekj308 09-24-2005, 05:54 AM Hi Andy
I'm wouldn't mind giving the 5a a good flogging on a good machine that has no backlash and has been levelled. I've got a wood 3a machine that is a bit rickety as far as backlash and all round slop goes. The 5a can supply 2.7A continuous on X and Y and can supply 2.7A across Z, A and C. I was (I am? LOL) planning to counter balance Z so there wasn't going to be a great deal of current required on Z anyway. I have got MEGA step resolution so a pulse generator with a decent frequency would be great. I've tried the freebie Mach2 so I've only gone to 25kHz. I can't wait until MachX and the G-Rex are paired up.
If there is a machine in the Melbourne metro looking for a one night stand with my 5a I would be willing to set up a date.
Derek
PS G'Day Dave from CNC Teknix. Me and John L drove you back to St Kilda from the model railroaders meeting John invited you to.
andy_ck87028 09-24-2005, 06:31 AM Hi Derek
Love the proposal but my machine has yet to have drive assembly.
Interesting u talking about railroading, I started this wretched CNC lark as a way of accurately building coach sets in Gauge1.
I might get back to that one day after this bug has been worked thru!
See U soon hopefully.
Andy
mikie 09-24-2005, 08:03 AM Hey Guys,
Good to see there is some interest in a et together.
Okay the date is set to the 23rd and we can start praying for rain so we can have a nice sunny day instead.
Hope some others can join us,
P.s i suspect Nigel is in, if he ever gets back from holidays
/Michael
Kookaburra 09-25-2005, 11:22 PM Good to hear from you Derek!! Thanks for the lift by the way!!
Wish I could attend the Barby guy's. Maybe I should schedule a businness trip that weekend. MMMmmm
By the way can I mention to you guy's that "THE SWANS WON THE FLAG", how happy am I :wee:
mikie 09-28-2005, 05:39 AM Mmmmmm, i think i'll report this post of yours Dave to the moderator as offensive.
Bugger, you are the moderator
Kookaburra 09-30-2005, 04:21 PM After 72 Years I think I will allow my own offensive behaviour to be allowed just this once , lol
I am still on a high, after being a club member for 10 years (9 disapointing years) I think it will take a long time to come down. I will be engraving a 500mm x 500mm swans logo with Premiership Winners 2005 at the bottom for my Bar, as soon as I do I will post a pic of it. (That is if anyone give two hoots)
I might be down in Melbourne some time in the next 2 weeks and would love to catch up for a beer if anyone is interested. I will be staying in St. Kilda but can come in to town to meet up.
mikie 10-12-2005, 03:44 AM Okay Boys,
I've had a few messages as to where it's to be held.
Before I forget to post my address, here it is.
32 Lorimer Road Wattle Glen, Victoria.
/Michael
mikie 10-12-2005, 04:55 AM Hey guys,
I have a favour to ask, I need to push the BBQ out 1 week. Something popped out of my sister in-law and the misses is pretty angry at me. Grrrrrr, women with no consideration for others.
Can we make it the 30th instead of the 23rd.
Thanks in advance
Michael
derekj308 10-13-2005, 06:47 AM Hey Guys
30th is good for me. Michael are you at the Wattle Glen Road end of Lorimer or the Reynolds end? Its a long road and I'm afraid of bunyips and yowies so I'm looking to take the shortest path (lol).
Cheers
Derek
ynneb 10-13-2005, 06:57 AM Shaun ( Boros) and myself will see you all on the 30th as well.
EDIT: I just want to say to those who read this thread but are from other places. This will be our third BBQ now. Since meeting with each other we have formed a great network of friends with a common interest. It is great to see what others are doing and what thier interest in CNC is. Its a great time to compare softwares, designs, ideas etc. It flushes out people in your own nick of the woods that you mightnt have realsied were so local. We have had at least 10 people at each BBQ.
For example we had one guy who casts iron and needs his CNC to make molds, he showd some interesting pieces he had made. A few guys who were mill heads, a lathe guy, a few router heads and maybe one or two wannabee tyre kickers. Its really an eye opener to see different uses for CNC.
I strongly urge others to do the same in other places around the world.
mikie 10-13-2005, 05:24 PM Hi Derek,
Yes, it's two houses in from the Wattle Glen - Kangaroo ground road
/Michael
mikie 10-23-2005, 05:29 PM Okay boys,
For other details you probably wish to know.
Bring your own meat/patties and beer if you wish.
I will make up a few salads and have some soft drinks available.
Cheers
Michael
andy_ck87028 10-27-2005, 05:39 AM Would love to be able to make it but 30th no good (going walking for 4 days in the high country - prior commitment)
Will definitely stay in touch and hope all missed steps are kept to a minimum!
Happy CNCing
Andy
mikie 10-27-2005, 07:18 PM Sorry Andy that you can't make it.
Feel free to drop in anytime as you have my number and address
/Mikie
garagefela 10-28-2005, 11:13 AM Hey Mikie,
Look forward to meeting you and will try and bring some good weather over in the boot of the car. No promises though.

derekj308 10-28-2005, 05:59 PM Hi Mikie
What time would you like us to start arriving?
Cheers
Derek
mikie 10-29-2005, 06:39 PM Sorry for the late reply,
if we start at 11.00 we can have a chat and then get into the barbie
/Mikie
ynneb 10-29-2005, 07:13 PM Mikie, Shaun and myself will not be getting there until 12.30
Please start cooking without us.
mikie 10-30-2005, 02:56 AM Hey everyone,
well its done, we have just finished another great barbie, where lots of great notes and yarns were exchanged. After a bit of PC troubles were resolved, the guys actually saw the box run - i think there were a few dobters of its ability.
I've attached a picture of the guys that showed up. L - R
Benny, Shaun, Nigel, Michael (Garagefela) and Derek.
I've also attatched one of Benny doing some work. Just to prove to all of you he is a man of many talents.
Well, I hope everyone had a good time, I know i did. See you all at the next event.
/Michael
mikie 10-30-2005, 03:07 AM P.s Almost forgot.
Someone left a lunch box - drop me a pm and i'll organise getting it back to you
/Mikie
ynneb 10-30-2005, 03:52 AM Thanks Mikie fo a great day. It was great to catch up with every one again.
You've done well on your machine too.
I found it interesting talking about not only machines, but the bussiness side of CNC related work.
Nigel, your bagpipe valves and niche was a very interesting concept.
I really hope our training nights idea kicks off soon.
derekj308 10-31-2005, 04:30 AM Hi Guys
I've attached the URL of the linear guide system I was talking about.
http://www.nexengroup.com/rp/
There is a distributor in Heidleberg @ http://www.nexengroup.com/nexen/jsp/sub.jsp/home/contact/contact
Price?, suitability for homebrew cnc?, thought it might be worth looking at.
BTW thanks to Mikie and his wife for hosting the BBQ.
Cheers
Derek
ynneb 10-31-2005, 05:15 AM Hey Mikie and Nigel, I found a use for that material you gave me. Cutting boards. You were right, it does machine beautifully.
See below.
Oh, the not so round edge was my fault and not the machines fault. I did not place zero properly, hence I did a touch of air cutting in one corner. Still it came out ok.
I want more of that stuff. It'll be cutting boards for Christmas presents for all my family members this year :)
Other ideas for its use could be drink coasters.
Or hot serving dish table protectors.
You could make a complete matching set of the lot. It wouldnt be the money you would make off them, but the money you saved instead of buying presents. (_i_) (Tight Arse)
NIGEL 10-31-2005, 06:58 AM Yep, great day, thanks again Mikie.
Benny, good job on the bread board, you sure don't waste any time.
You can grab some more next time your out this way. Looks you got some dust to make before xmas.
Nigel.
garagefela 11-01-2005, 05:45 PM Hey Mikie,
Just dropping you a line to say thank-you to you and your wife for your hospitality and opening your house for the great day.
Your machine worked fantastic and even after having worked on CNC mills for years I never tire of watching something working under it's own steam.
Except the time when I walked back to my machine to see the pineapple cutter glowing red under the coolant!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers Michael
mikie 11-01-2005, 09:21 PM Hey Derek,
Seems to simple, but it's really like a belt system,upside-down.
Benny,
Hopefully it will make a lot of bread for you.
Nice job.
/Mikie
