Hi,

I started like you. I collected old/broken printers from everywhere. The motors as I can see in the pic are too small and they are 7.5 degrees step, not great for resolution. You must look for printers like HP Laserjet series I/II/III or any OLD and big printer. There you find motors of 0.65-1 Nm.

Regarding the board I can not comment. It is SMT which means...difficult to salvage parts. Again, look for old printers....Usually, they have SLA series IC, which myself I did use yet, despite the fact I have a bunch of, but in some printers I found out also L297/L298. For driver and interface go to Phil's site and chose.. I started with discrete unipolar. It was useful just for learning. It has poor performance comparing with L297/L298 or A3977 you can find there, but it is cheap and easy to build, and it moves the machine. You can work with it.

Does all 3 printers have to be the same?
We are from Croatia so is there any store on this area for electronics? i got some kind of reductor which goes between that thing on first pic and step-motor on fourth pic...

Try photo-copier repair shops or photo-copier agents. They usually dump the old photo-copiers without salvaging any parts. With some luck you can get decent steppers, much larger than the ones pictured as well as 608 series (skate) bearings and stainless steel slides.

The PM55 motor should be able to move something if chopper driven and directly coupled to 8 or 10mm threaded rod.
10mm has 1.5mm move per turn, at 48 steps: 0.03125 mm/step.
That "something" can't be much, it won't work for a router. Might be just enough for the Z to lift the spindle if it's a light one

Most important: what kind of machine is it: what spindle and materials?

A4 size is small, you could use the carriage guides from the printers and use these for the Y and/or Z. Have a look at the drawer slide thread, I posted some pictures for this.

Looks like you misunderstood the important question.

What do you want to do with the machine?
Only drilling, milling wood or aluminium?

This will define the kind of spindle and stepper power you need.

Once this is known then you can go ahead and select motors, electronics etc..

well... milling wood and aluminium if possible....

In that case you won't be able to use any of the parts you have, not strong enough.
I'd suggest you have a good look at several machines discussed in the wood and metalworking area to get an idea.

zet jaro is a little bit wrong...the wood he was talking was balsa....this was primerly my little project for cutting parts of airplane models...but...The photocopier machine idea is great! there are big stepers...and pretty big slides...hm...the steppers and the construction is the simple part of the build...we need some kind of driver board...so we culd cut balsa...or grave on wood....and when this thing works fine...then we will try some thing to cut aluminium.....

is that it?And how should then make programs...(i know a little bit of Gcode but A-cad is prpreferable).I know there is an gcode converter from dxf gcode..but don't we need some special controler for transformation into tsteps

brijem da smo uvijek tak radili na praksi, kad je malo jaci materijal onda smo uvijek uzeli glodalo za taj materijal, smanjili brzinu pomaka glodala a povecali njegovu brzinu vrtnje... to je tak uvijek islo... e sad je samo pitanje dal se moze tolko smanjit... e da, jos smo smanjili dubinu prodiranja u materijal u jednom krugu...znaci glodalo bi ulazilo po pol mm ili 1mm u materijal i napravilo 10-15 puta tako dok nebi izglodalo do kraja...

It seems the I did not communicate in right way. For conbtroller/driver visit Phil's site - www.pminmo.com There you find out everything you need. Full of explanations. Just buy the components or get them from old printers and build it.

we found on some local site a good idea for the Z-axe...The driver step motor for FLOPPY disk unit...And the steppers shuld be bought, hopefuly in month ore two it shuld be over... :wee:
