View Full Version : Debating 3977 3 axis
pminmo 07-05-2005, 08:22 PM I've had this design done for a couple of months. It's a 3 axis all in one design based on the Allegro A3977SED. (connector for connection to a 4th axis via one of the Open soucre boards) To be perfectly honest, right now I just don't have the time, energy and spare cash to order, build and checkout. A LOT of the design is cut and paste from previous designs, so it should be pretty low risk. If there is a person(or persons) out there that is interested in persuing building one for themselves, willing to help pay for the proto board's, contact me offline. Needs to be somebody that is not a novice to electronics, and doesn't need a lot of mentoring. You should be able to get a board and the parts for around $75 without the A3977SED's.

zoltan 07-28-2005, 02:47 PM Hi Phil,
Right now I started to build joe's version of 3977. I have built the boards. Actually, I found out another local supplier of presensitive boards which are working great with my homemade UV box. Unbelievable what quality in just 2 min. I made three boards of 3977 and three of picstep and they are without any defect. Not even a deviation of width of trace under a microscope!!! So, to make the long story short. Send me the files (Eagle) and I will build it. I bought six broken printers (mechanics failure) with 3977 SED inside.

pminmo 07-28-2005, 06:24 PM It's a double sided board. Much finer pitch than the others.

philba 09-21-2005, 07:08 PM how are you guys soldering the PLCC 3977?
My first attempt at hand soldering was a complete disaster - several bridges that no wick would get (i've got the really thin stuff for smd). I've got a hot air station so I may try that or maybe the sparkfun hotplate method. Any suggestions?
I haven't got any solder paste (yet...). Would just tinning the pads and fluxing the leads do ok? Should I tin the leads as well? I'm going to make some test boards for a sacrificial PLCC test, hopefully today (after I fix my shop lighting that the *!1&^%!! electrician left in a mess. grrrrr).

Got a parts list to go with it?

pminmo 09-21-2005, 10:18 PM philba,
Fine soldering iron and a flux pin. I use a .032 round tip.
Hobbycnc,
I haven't ordered a pcb yet. I've actually tweeked the design some by making it opto isolated.

Hmm...You ask for help in prototyping it and I wanted to see the BOM. How can someone help without a BOM?

Dave,
I'm not sure what part of the message you didn't undertand.
HobbyCNC 09-22-2005, 05:11 PM Dave,

You ask for help in building one and I'm asking what the BOM contains to understand what's involved in helping you build one.

what printers have the 3977 in them?
zoltan 10-06-2005, 04:41 PM Hi,
They have been some industrial printers - Oliveti. They have been used on assembly lines.I bought in total 10 pcs, all of them not working, as I was told they had some mechanical problems (the guy who brought them to the recycling company told me), but only six had A39977 inside and the other four, same type, had controllers with A6615SED (I did not check what IC is it). I did not record what was the name of printers, but for sure they have been Oliveti because I did not pull out all the components from boards and I still have them. As here you do not find very easy new parts and when you find out they are very expensive, I am buying broken or old printers, scanners, faxes, cashier counters, etc from a recycling company. Because they sell everything by kilograms I am going there and disassembly on spot the equipments and pull out the boards, motors, etc, and pay only for kg of material I want.
Be aware that you can not desolder A3977 without a hot air gun.
Zoltan
philba 10-06-2005, 05:06 PM thanks! that was a fast reply. I do have a hot air rework station but doubt I'll see any of those printers. sigh...
By the way, allegro is pretty easy with samples - they send me 3 3977SEDs for free.
