Up until now, I have been pleased with the X&Y #25 chain drives on my home built 2'x4' router machinery. They are fast and seem precise (esp on Y, where the precision and reproducibility is ~0.002"). But it is still possible to manually force tool deflections of +/-0.010" (motors on) and I think this is due to chain stretch.
This shows up on fine detail work such a V-Carve files. Re-tensioning the chains makes the motors work harder, but no real improvement.

Can anyone comment on the level of positioning precision they have obtained with this type of chain-drive system? Are there any special tricks to improving the accuracy and stability?
Cheers!
