hi everyone, great forum...

I`d like to build small (cheap) CNC wood router for hobby carving with my Dremel etc. Wood like to purchase complete controller w/motors - don`t have the time and knowledge to fight cables/assembly. Can anyone recommend basic (complete/tested)3 axis microstepping controller w/3 nema 23, 100oz/in holding torque motors available for purchase on the Web?
Centronics sells their system w/motors for around $1200. Is this the bottom line...? How about reliability of this stuff...?
thank you

It's not a microstepper drive but www.stepperworld.com has complete systems for hobby machines. Get the FET 3 board (not the cruiser special) and ask him about 100 oz'in steppers that are nema 23 size. They are not on his page but he sold me three. I think it cost me just over $200.00 for the whole setup, including the cable and current limiting resistors.

If you are willing to buy the steppers seperately, get the xylotex 3 axis board. www.xylotex.com and find some 100 oz steppers on ebay. No resistors required.

balsaman,

Why don't you like the cruiser special?

I personally don't like the nema 34 motors. I prefer nema 23. They are faster for the same oz/in.

JMHO.

thank you Balsaman, SP-3 looks very good, should be able to move that Dremel slowly..They say it`s complete system ready to run.. Interesting. I decided to try this system; this is for learning experience- in the future I`ll be buying big servo system for serious 3D carving (production style) with serious 3D software. Before I spend all my time and money on router parts and expensive controller I decided to play with hobby machine...

Walter,

Get the FET3 board, with the sp-3 motors. It's a much better board.

As Balsaman said, the xylotex board is also good, with a 24v supply. ebay has some steppers here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=12577&item=2543863283) that usually go for about $25. He has them on there all the time, also sets of three. I use them with the xylotex board and 24v PSU, rapids of about 40IPM and cutting speeds of 20IPM are easy.

Actually, if it was me, I would go with the xylotex. Faster, and it's microstepping, and no resistors required, but it's not the "whole package".

Just found out about Xylotex 3 axis board... Yahoo user group also looks interesting... I found 24V 6.5A power supply.... Looks easy. This may be a better choice....
