I bought a Mt #2 with a drill chuck for my Lathemaster lathe tail stock and when the chuck is installed it won't get a nice tight fit and just spins. Any Idea how I can fix this, it the taper to short or the wrong angle?

Give it a tap? Mine fits ok with a tap into the tail stock. Then back the tail stock out all the way to release the taper. I think we have the same lathe, but mine is the HF version.

turn the quill out a little, its probably hitting the back of it.

It might be possible that you have one with a longer mt2 shank, or an alignment peice.

Does the Morse taper have a tang at the end? I bought one from HF, and had to cut and grind the tang off.

I tried tapping it and no good.

Try putting a center in (they have no tang). If it works I would suggest that there is something a little off with either the tang or the tailstock receiver.
You will probably just have to grind a little off the tang.

The only difference I can see it the stock dead center is longer that the mt 2 that I got from LMS, the tapers look otherwise identical.

just for clarification, is it the chuck that won't stay on the arbor, (ie the jacobs taper or whatever) or the morse taper in the tailstock?

I’m curious about your comment about the taper being to short – it doesn’t look like other mt2 tooling you have?

There are only a few things that could be wrong….wrong taper, ding/wart/dirt on male or female, or the male is bottoming out on something before it makes contact, as others suggested.

Have you tried it in other mt2 female tooling you might have? Can you confirm the female in the quill is good (holds other tooling ok)? Does it grip at all (you can feel contact being made, but releases under load)?

oops some of this you confirmed while i was typing :o

This is what I have - http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1148 and I'm talking about the shank into the tail stock.

Nevermind, I see the problem- "If you purchase this product you will not have to cut the tang off the Morse taper. The arbor on this chuck is the correct length for the mini lathe."
