I just changed computers on my CNC Lathe; went from a P1-120 to a P3-500
Running Turbocnc; all I did was backup my files from the old C:\ (Turbocnc; my C:\CNC directory and the complete DOS system) just used the old dos command
The used the Restore command after a format C: /s and copied a few files (edit.com restore.com etc)
After that I simply pulled the old one out; connected the new one in it's place
Hit the on switch; gained some steps/sec; used these to up my Max steps in both axis
Loaded the same last file and hit the start button (space bar)

Just like I had never moved the computer; axis correct; going the right way (just a bit faster in rapid) and believe it or not; within 0.01mm on diameter

It just could not be easier

Just setting up an XP machine now for Artsoft; P-3-600 Dell; got it for $100
Puny 1.7gig HDD; so it's out for a 10gig
The 1.7gig will become another Dos HDD
