how would you model a shaft with grooves chamfers etc.

    hi,
im new to alibre and can do a few basic modeling for milling jobs but got a shaft to model which has grooves all down it with flats on and a hole in with chamfers inside the hole.

so firstly how would you go about modeling a shaft like explained would you do the O/D sizes first and add the grooves/chamfers as i go or do you have to sketch each different size on a face and extrude as i go.

    any help much appreciated

I would start with a revolve operation, using the X, Y or Z axis as the axis of revolution. That way you can create most of the shaft's shape in a single operation. Don't bother adding chamfers or fillets to the sketch. It's easier to add them to the solid model later on.

For the grooves (splines, I assume), I would model a single groove and use an extrude cut to make it. Then use the Feature Pattern tool to make a radial pattern of the grooves.

For the flat on the shaft, a simple extrude cut will do the job.

    thanks for replys

i managed the O/D of shaft with the grooves ok but think went wrong way about doing it, i sketched the O/D of one end first then extruded that till the O/D changed then sketched the new O/D on the face extruded and then extruded that, but was a tedius job doing it that way as some of the groves were only 5mm wide and the was a few on the shaft.

ill try your way see how i get on TXFred, and ill have a look through that link and try and copy that example as abit of practice dlaery, cheers.

im now struggling with a groove in the I/D tho now, i tried to copy what you said TXFred, but the way i did it was i created a plane on one of the sides on I/D, then sketched a little groove on that plane and extrude cut that to depth and tried to circle feature it like you would when creating a PCD with holes but round the I/D but come up as an error, think it was because the overlapped or something but i realised i sketched the groove as in like a block rather than arced round the I/D, if ya get me, confusing myself now, lol.

its on the works computer cant have a look right so will try again at work. unless can get it on my computer

I see, your grooves are circular grooves. I was thinking that they ran lengthwise, like splines.

For circular grooves, I would just make them part of the original revolve sketch.

thought i reply'd back to this, ha, sorry didnt explain properly, anyway i managed the groove on the O/D ok, by sketching and extruding every time the dia changed, is that how you would do this?
but im still struggling to get a circular groove in a bore
