I posted this in another thread...but I may have misstated what I am trying to do.
If I take an extrusion...for arguments sake, a .5 inch wide by 2 by 4 inch block. Let's say I drill a .25" hole through the center of this block. Then I want to cut the entire block in half..bisecting the hole...is there a way to do this? I know that in this situation, I could just create two seperate extrusions, and make it that way, but hte problem is that the hole I want to drill needs to be at an angle, and so when I do that, I don't know how to cut the piece in half. One side will have more of a hole than the other due to the angle the hole is drilled at.
Here is a pdf of what I am trying to do. I need to cut down along the line drawn in the picture. Since the hole goes through at an angled plane, the two sides won't be symmetric when they are cut in two.
You need to insert some new geometry to accomplish this methinks. Here's what I did.
- Insert -> Axis and select the hole you created and you'll have an axis passing through your hole.
- Then Insert -> Plane and chose the new axis and one of the sides running parallel to your hole. This would be one of the .5" x 4" sides. The resulting plane will be perpendicular to what you're aiming for so...
- Insert -> Plane again and chose the plane just created and specify an angle of 90*.
- Draw a big box on this second new plane and extrude cut to the necessary distance.
That's along the lines of what I would like to do. If possible though...I'd like to make the two halves the same dimensions....and have the hole cutout be different in each half in order to make it so when the two pieces fit together, they produce the hole at the proper diameter and original angle.

I dont have Alibre loaded to be able to direct you with exact "terms" that they use, but in most apps, if you insert a "plane" (or just a large flat surface) that runs through the hole at that angle, and do a boolean difference, then you should end up with your block cut into 2 peices down the middle of the hole angle..
Also in Alibre, I think I remember from the demo that they have "parting planes".. Look for this and see if it has the abilty to keep both halves as solids, as opposed to just showing you the "parting lines" as geometry to use... ALthough, depending on your CAM package, you may only need 2d geometry, in which case, getting the parting lines with that method would work too!
This is what I was trying to do...ended up doing an extrude cut over the object to remove what I didn't want. This is how it ended up turning out...don't know if there is an easier or better way, but this is what I came up with????
This is what I was hoping to do...aka, bisect the block exactly in half which leaves differing angles on the hole cut at an angle....
However, this seems to be a roundabout method of doing it..and if anyone has a "better" solution, I'd love to hear it.
The only problem with this method is that if I go and change the angle of the hole going through the block, I have to re-extrude cut both halves to give me the two new parts.....I was hoping there was some way to use logic to just cut the piece in half and then have two seperate parts....but I don't think that this is possible.
I may be misinterpreting the problem. I am going to assume that you want to split the model and keep both pieces. Not knowing what software you are using, ours will let us trim a solid to a surface and keep both pieces. That way if you need to regenerate after modifying there should be no problem.
