I Wish I Could Afford Solidworks

    Hi Everyone,

I've bought Alibre Standard and also purchased the training DVD. I'm now hunting for completed part files to study how users have built up their parts. Personally I've found this is a great way to "get it" after learning Alibre tutorials. You look in the Design explorer and there's the build up history, extra planes added, etc, etc.

However, much to my surprise I'm finding it very difficult to find any medium to complex part files anywhere. I've posted on CNCzone and the Alibre forum asking for part files to study. So far over 100 views and zero offers.

I tried Googling for Solidworks part files and found heaps of them as well as plenty tutorials freely available. So it seems once you're at a stage where you may want to study the construction of finished parts you're at a disadvantage. Seems you either have to purchase yearly maintenance or ask on the forum and wait for a reply every time you need to learn more. I've emailed Alibre sales to ask them for a section on their forum where users can post their part files (not just pictures) for others to view. Don't understand why this doesn't already exist.

If you're a beginner and need to learn fast so your CAD can make you money then consider if the extra cost of solidworks will be viable from a money spent vs money returned perspective.

Journeyed.com sells student versions of SolidWorks $200
    http://www.journeyed.com/product/sea...rch=solidworks
You need to provide them with some information, bla bla bla.
I was not a student when I bought software from them for the first time, but I knew someone who was.

isn't the standard home and hobby software $100 ?

Seems to me users are likely reluctant to post part files that contain intellectual property ie proprietary information.
The AD forum on the Alibre website is frequented by experienced users like ralf and wavathy (to name a few) who are eager and quick to help out when others have a question.
Perhaps others may be more receptive to your request after you've participated a bit. That's not an uncommon paradigm. I always get a chuckle when someone posts say in a CAM forum that they're running the latest version of an expensive CAM package on an pricey CNC machine and need a post, as if the guy that had to pay good money for the post from their reseller is just gonna give it to another forum user with 3 total posts.

    Beefy,
I would suggest that since Solidworks is often taught at the university level there are many parts created ande posted that are non-production or practice parts.

The Alibre users that I know are for the most part small companies with parts that they are trying to bring to market or are manufacturing at this time. No one want to give this inforamtion away.

The Solidwork Parts that you find on the web, how good are they? Where they created by a knowledgable designer or a fellow student. Who can say.

The professional solidwork designers and for that matter the Alibre Designers that are not designing for themselves are under non-disclosure agreements for their REAL work and can't post the parts.

Get in and start designing, if you have questions about how to do something then ask, but don't asked for whole product info or designs.

I have found people willing to share knowledge freely if asked for in the correct way.

What are you having trouble doing?

I don't think that being un-able to find assemblies to study warrents spending a couple a couple extra thousand percent on software (literally). The student versions of software expire after 18 months i believe. I love alibre standard for what it is and how much it costs

Thanks to all of you who gave me constructive tips

Thanks to all of you who gave me constructive and helpful replies.

To the ones who just had a shot at me, nothing. I was only giving a consideration to anyone who may need to learn 3D cad quickly to make themselves money in business. Discussions on this matter on other CAD forums pretty much mirrored what I said. Why don't you Google those and have a shot at them too.

Yes I do get the impression that most users are keeping a tight hold of their file. Not one single user has offered a drawing much to my surprise.

However, I have found a someone elsewhere who is letting me see his drawings and oh I like them. I'm quite new to all this and even a more complex part doesn't seem so complex once you've seen a few parts and how they were built up. As the saying goes it's easy once you've seen it done.

    Beefy,

I don't think that anyone took a shot at you. We explained why you could not find or have someone share their models with you. I am glad you found a mentor and we wish you well.

Personally, pick a simple part to design and when you run into problems ask for some help.

I believe that you'll find a more responsive audience.
