The amount of memory you buy is a function of expected need and cost.
All of our newer machines have 1 meg of memory. This is sufficient for our needs. On our lathe we may have 100 to 150 programs resident at one time. Mills generally have longer programs than lathes.
Stored on the computer we have many thousands of programs.
Our two older mills have maximum baud rates of 38.4 kbaud and the newer machines have 115.2 capability. We always operate at maximum baud rate for the particular machine.
If you do contouring with large files ( mold, carbon electrode, or model ) you may find DNC (drip feed) more practical than buying enough memory to load the entire program in memory.
