The main benefit of microstepping is making the motor run smoother. You should start out with 1/8 step. If it's not running smoothly, try 1/4 step. Jeff at Xylotex usually recommends running in 1/8 step mode. Although I have seen some people post about their machines running better in 1/4 step mode. Other than that, the only other reason not to run in 1/8 step mode is if you're controller can't output steps fast enough.
