I don't think there is anybody crazy enough, even on this forum, to attempt something so off the wall. Why bother to stand it on its tail, plenty of people use their lathes the right way up for light milling operations. Why bother with an xy table, you already have the cross-slide for the first axis and a simple, readily available vertical slide would provide the second axis. etc, etc.
Good luck with your plan. It will be interesting to see the finished result.
