We had a grad student trying to sell an oven, but the scammers got greedy. Our guy wanted to get something out of the oven that he got forced to replace by his apartement manager. Turned out that it wasn't the oven that was bad, so he had a good oven on his hands. I would have liked to have gotten involved in that scam by a red-blooded American crook, but it was too late for me to fix it by that point.
Anyway, a scammer said they would give the grad student $350 but he had to cash a $5000 money order for them. I told him what the scam was, and he backed out. The scammers kept raising the amount that he could keep from the money order, getting to $1500. The person he was communicating with was supposedly in London. They did have a local rep though. Police were called, but wouldn't do anything. |
