I know that Mitutoyo makes Excellent coolant prof digital calipers, they are spendy but well worth it! They last a looooong time. Here is the link...

Ask retired machinist around here or other forums, see if anyone is selling theirs to get a better price.
What kind of machining does he do? The tooling will depend on the trade he is in...but everyone needs calipers to start with :-P
