What tools are being thrown? I regularly use 3, 4, and 5" facemills with no toolchanger problems.
Are the spring-loaded jaws in the tool pockets gripping your toolholders securely, or do they wobble in the toolchanger?
One of the machines I run, with the horrible, destructive Syntillo coolant, has occasional tool gripper problems. The jaws will gum up and not spring shut on the toolholder. To free them up, I'll toolchange to the offending pocket, and hit E-stop in the middle of the toolchange, when the spindle is at it's highest point. Simply loosening and retightening the shoulder bolts that the tool gripper jaws pivot on is usually enough to free them up.
Other than that, there's no parameter listed in the VF3's manual for the toolchanger's motor. It's a simple DC gearmotor with a switch to signal when a tool pocket is aligned.
