Melting chips may not be very successful on a DIY scale. As I understand it the recyclers use either a vacuum furnace or melt them under an inert gas. The chips have a lot of surface area and a lot of crud stuck to them and just melting in the presence of atmospheric oxygen results in a lot of the aluminum being oxidized and lost.
