Hoss has equipped his X2 with a grinding head. Search for the Hoss thread. Maybe someone can post a link. The travels you mention are bigger than an X2 or even an X3.
Truthfully, the mag chuck and grinding head will likely eat your budget. Probably close to realistic though if you already have a mill with the precise Z axis cnc'ed.
I won't say it can't be done, but I just don't see how unless a very good deal falls in your lap.
Ebay is a pretty good source for information sometimes. Just check out some of the types of things that might be suited to your project and watch as those particular auctions progress. Then you might get an idea of the type of budget you might need to tackle this project.
