Instead of a single thread wrapping around the screw 10 times per inch, there are 5 seperate threads that wrap 2 times per inch. So you still have 10 threads per inch, but you only have to turn the screw 2 times to move one inch. Screw with multiple starts are more efficient than single start screws, sort of midway between single start and ballscrews.
