That is an interesting idea. My parts are small and thin. In my Chick vises I have milled a 0.1" pocket, so there is not much room to stick a rod in there.
I did follow Chick's advise, and that was to clean everything. Well in the process on doing that I discovered what my problem was. It was mainly with my stationary jaw.
It seems that the 2 metal inserts in the vise had bonded into a some trash. So I cleaned some of that out and very slightly pushed those inserts down. Now, everything is leval as it should be. So I just saved myself over 1000 dollars from having to buy new slide assemblies.
