What kind of resolution are you seeing on the unit you purchased? I've been doing quite a bit of research this weekend and am almost thinking a small touch probe unit would be easier to build and more accurate. I thought about rotary absolute encoders on the arm, but they are very expensive and you would need four! The
Homemade Touch Probe site looks to fill the bill however.
