I relly dont think the dremel will have enough power and the drill concerns me because they are not designed for that kind of duty cycle or side load. Example-usually you can push pull the spindle of a hand drill in and out 10 - 20 thou. when you are drilling the pressure always holds the spindle agains the rear bearing. side loading would cause it to slop up and down.
I would think a router head would be better choice for spindle/tool holder.
To get that kind of travel out of a conventional mill you need to buy a 9 x 42 which is at least 2000 pounds and has a 2 Hp head.
Vertical bench mill in this catalogue is $2000 weighs 650lbs has travels of 18 x 7 x 5 inches and a 2 hp motor.

I suggest buying a used 9 x 42 for under $1000 and convert it.
Other option would be to build a router table but I dont think that would be rigid enough to mill steel. |
