Video - DIY 3D Laser Scanner by Colin Ord

    Hi all,

For those interested I have created an 8 minute long video showcasing my home built DIY 3D Laser Scanner and XYZ-RGB pointcloud viewer.

    DIY 3D Laser Scanner output.

The project can be seen in more detail here:

This is my latest attempt at creating a simple 3D scanner using just a webcam, laser pointer and simple programming code.

    Project Highlights

    * Superfast setup. Preview scans can be created in seconds. Quality scans can take a few minutes.
    * Free scanning, Data captured with a manual movement of the laser sweeping over the object.
    * Webcam capture: Uses VFWGrab for capturing images.
    * Simple Calibration: No need for difficult calibration setups.
    * Live preview: I can watch the scanning process directly in the application.
    * Textures: Colour photo mapping implemented.
    * File Formats: ASCII and OBJ file formats. XYZ, XYZRGB, OBJ file format with coloured vertices.

    Kind regards,
    Colin Ord

Would this work with a rotary table? What I mean is, could you keep the laser stationary and rotate the object? I didn't notice, but is your software available for download?
    I may not be good....

I am glad to see you here.. You are a genius man on the earth with a big heart to share... I really like the software and appreciate your efforts....

Just curious about the accuracy .. Also want to know if we scan with different angle, will the scans can be merge accurately in 3rd party software...

Whatever you did is great and keep posting your work Colin..
