new to scaned files what is the best type of file for scanned images? A stl is good but you cant edit it at all. Dxf lacks the 3d needed to edit and seems overly large.Iges didnt work well for my program. I have an obj file but cant open it and need a convertor but i dont know what is the best file for editing, removing parts , rotating etc Any help would be great

Hi, You sound like me 3 months ago. Yes you can edit .stl files in Rhino. Download the free evaluation and give it a try. The fouth icon up from the left tool bar is 'show points' Click this and select your .stl , hit enter, and your off. Drag points, add points, delete points and modify 'till your hearts content :0)

Cool! I really need to learn Rhino. I own it, but don't have any skillz... Could you point out a good tutorial to learn to use Rhino? It seems very different from every other CAD system I have used...

Rhino do a good tutorial CD. It's very boring and would be better if they had done a voice over, but it gives instructions and examples for all the functions.

.obj is really no different from an .stl. I think, though, that .obj will allow quad faces, where .stl is triangles only.

I'm pretty sure blender can edit .stl in a way similar to Rhino. And it's free. Rhino is developing their product for Mac's and if you have a Mac you can get a fully functional version for free (mac only) as a tester. I'm not sure if they're still doing this, but I believe they are.
