Surfaces are absolutely enough. In fact, STL files are only surfaces. It "looks" like a solid if it is a watertight STL, but there isn't any definition to the "inside" of such an object - it is just a "zero thickness" skin...

I did a Quick scan at low resolution, so that I would not need to sit still for too long. I did three scans (one head on, and one from each side at about 30 degrees off center) and stitched them together. Did you go to the Fotki link I posted above? It has more pictures from each step of the process.

Spent the day collecting hardware to get the fourth axis functional (chuck, morse taper adapters, live center, wiring, etc.) and got it functional around 5 pm. Then fired up DeskProto for the first time under license - only used the free demo period about a year ago before today

    End result is this code:

Machine is cutting now, will post video and pix later of the roughing stage, I am sure it will need at least one finish pass as well...

    First pass complete!

This is in poplar just to try it out, which gets quite fuzzy if machined in certain directions. I have some oak to use "for realz" which should machine (and look) much better... It is much smaller than I was hoping for, but the 4th axis just takes up so much room on the table, I don't have the X-axis length to go too much bigger. I will move it out and do as big a version as I can eventually...

That was done with a 1/4" flat end mill, 1/8" is in the machine now.

Put a length of RHS or channel steel under the 4th axis and tail stock and hang over ends of table will give you more X length.
