hi, Using Logitech 9000 you can get great details.. for example scanning of 1 Euro coin with all stars in it ... Or, scanning a Housefly with full details of legs hair etc...

Scanning softwares analyze each frame so for scanning a minute you will get 100's of frames to be analyzed by the software and if each frame is of 22MPixel..then you need super computer to compute.. My honest opinion

David export in OBJ format..You can convert it into STL or CAD file using other softwares.. Cut3D and some other softwares also takes OBJ files and generate toolpaths...

    Mcphill,

    David Vs NextEngine

It would be good if someone would put a monetary value on all that time spent tweaking your DIY Davidscanner. Someone put down $3 for glue and setup time. I don't know about you but my time is worth money. I would say my NextEngine took me 30 mins to completely setup, download, install, and calibrate. Thats $10 of my time for 30 minutes. I imagine it took several hours of tweaking to get your Davidscanner running just right.

    So $2995+$23 shipping+$10 setup = $3028

The subject of scan size vs resolution needs to be addressed as well. Yes you could scan a car with DavidScanner in 8 scans, but your resolution is going to go down. You aren't getting the same resolution scanning at 12 inches as you are at 6 ft. You also mention purchasing a high powered green laser. I would suspect that the NextEngine 3d Scanner could be upgraded with higher power laser diodes fairly easily.

Finally for scanning large complex objects, like a car, you probably aren't going to have a 3d printer or CNC making a whole complete car in one go.

So you are modeling it just for looks. If you're modeling just for looks try Autodesk 123D Catch. It uses photogrammetry to capture 3d models from your digital camera pics. Works just fine for "looks". Cost almost nothing.

Thanks everyone for all the insight.

I'm new to this forum , but I've spent the past few years with the RepRap community developing open source 3D printers.

I'm wondering if anyone has experimented with building the automated turntable and tilt axes using 3D printed parts, similar to how RepRap aims at building a 3D printer that can print most of it's components. It's ridiculous how expensive the NE multi-drive is ($1000) for example. Any thoughts on a DIY tilt axis?

I imagine the hardware would be simple to make. The controls for it would be another thing, though. I imagine there is a controller onboard the tilt axis module that takes in the incoming signals and turns it in to step and direction signals. Without knowing how that works, you will be SOL in making it move properly.
