As suggested I would put common and 5v on the black and red respectively and check with a meter, if you can see the glass scale and the graduations are distinguishable, it will probabally be about 100 to 300 pulses per rev on these motors. I have a couple of these but I scrapped the encoder due to low resolution, also you may be able to see the resolution printed on the center part of the disc (in good light!). Also with the cover off look at the IC numbers and it will give you an idea what kind of voltage/drivers the encoder output is
