Klox, I am not sure if this would be helpful, but I understand that if you bend a square bar of steel, that the bottom 1/3 of the bar is in compression (shorter) , and the top 2/3 is in tension (longer). This would give you an idea of where the neutral zone lies, which is still the original length of the bar.
