If you create a solid from a single surface, you will have a "2d" solid. There's no depth to it, so there's nothing to add/subtract to.
Try extruding the outline of the geometry you created in the direction you need, then when you've got 'depth' to your solid, you can do the boolean stuff.
You may need to create a construction plane to extrude the 3d surface/shape to.
