I've used fairly green poplar with good results (http://exactworks.com/portfolio/main...&g2_itemId=75). Got that board from lowes and I worried about it turning out since the board was pretty green, but with the darker stain on it, the image popped right out. Hard to photograph the results acurately, they always look better in person.
