If you seperate the two section (flames and base) onto different layers, then use join polyline to make each section one long line, you can successfully use the thickness property. I have enclosed the new file which has the 3d shapes as Joe has posted. Hope this helps, and I hope you can figure out how to round off which section you wanted!
