ok. so the jubject tells the tale. i promise i had it hooked up correctly.

here is what happened.

i set the vref as close to 3.5 as i could with a digital voltmeter.
i connected the motors the way the instructions said.
i connected the printer cable.
i connected both power supplies correctly.
i connected the fan.
i turned on the power to the 5v first
i turned on the power to the 24v second.
the led was lit.
the fan was turning.
i pressed the up arrow key to jog using turbocnc program.
as soon as i touched the key by board went pop with a flash.
and thats all she wrote.

do you think my printer port is bad and caused the short?

by the way the led comes on when i hook up the vcc. and the vref was at 3.5
