Ah. The compac is 533ghz with 1g ram. I'll take my 2ghz dell down there and hook that up to it and see if that works. The diagnostics show that the port is the right one and I set it up according to Campbell designs instuctions.
My initial thought was because the breakout board lit up as it should and the geckos lit up and the motors are getting current that it may just be some motor wiring I overlooked.
