I recently upgraded from a Plasmacam to a Samson table and cut a lot of heavier materials and, as a consequence the original grates were trashed inside three months. The main problem is, too much heat is transfered into the upper level of the grates, causing them to warp upwards at the outer edges. (This also happens when cutting thinner materials but, to a lesser extent, due to lower amperage settings) This became a real problem for me, trying to level large plates so I've designed a new "sacrificial" system that is strong, practical and easy to install and replace. Included are a PDF instruction sheet with photos and, PCM plans for both PlasmaCAM 4x4 & Samson 5x10 tables. All you then have to do is, cut the support frames on your PlasmaCAM or Samson table, then cut 2.5" x 1/8" (65 x 3mm) flat steel strips to length and fit in the frames.....Easy!!!! The slats are curved across the table and, are a sloppy fit in the support frames making for easy installation and removal however, the natural spring in the steel slat holds them in place very well. The curve across the table prevents you from following the grate when cutting straight lines, instead you're generally only crossing the slat, causing a lot less damage. When the slats do eventually become damaged, it’s easy to run a flap disc over the top surface or, remove the offending slat and run under a linisher. It’s also easy to clean slag off the slat, simply by removing and "stropping" with a half round file or similar. When the slats become unusable, simply replace as required. The grates run at the same height as the originals and, the support frames also retain the table edge location slot however, instead of the standard grate stop, you can use a length of 3/4" x 1/8" FMS (as shown in the photo) This is a simple, easy to install system that will save you money & time, save you the hassle of warped grates and, make it an easy task to replace once the slats become damaged beyond repair, something you won’t need to do for a long time. One other bonus of this system is, because the slats are full width and only 2” (50mm) apart, they also tend to prevent tip ups. Plans are supplied to suit both imperial and metric sized materials. (2.5” x 1/8” Vs 65 x 3mm) Sure, you could look at the photos and decide to copy the concept but, what is your time worth?? For a measly $15.00 all the measuring and design work is done, all you do is cut and fit….what could be more simple??
